The Shershah of Kargil is the definitive biography of Captain Vikram Batra, PVC — perhaps the most celebrated hero of the 1999 Kargil War.
It follows his journey from Palampur in Himachal Pradesh to the Indian Military Academy and his commission into 13 JAK Rifles, and on to the desolate, cordite-laced heights of Drass and Kargil.
His recapture of Point 5140 and the assault on Point 4875 became the stuff of legend, as did his victory cry, 'Yeh Dil Maange More.' He fell at twenty-four while saving a wounded comrade, and was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
Author Deepak Surana, whose inputs were acknowledged in the film Shershaah, brings together the boy, the officer and the legend in a tribute to a soldier who promised to return either hoisting the flag or wrapped in it.
