On 17 June 1997, Major Sukhwinder Jeet Singh Randhawa laid down his life leading a counter terror operation in Anantnag. Hit by enemy fire, he fought on and brought down two terrorists before he fell, an act of valour honoured with the Kirti Chakra. His widow, Mrs Ravinder Jeet ‘Romi’ Randhawa, then did what no Veer Nari had done before her. With a one year old in her arms she joined the Indian Army, rising to Lieutenant Colonel as the nation's first war widow to be commissioned. Cost of War is written by their daughter, Simran, a child who once used a toy phone to make imaginary calls to papa. It is her reminder that war does not just end with fallen soldiers, it also leaves behind the tattered lives of their families.
