Biography

Lieutenant Gautam Gurung hailed from the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand and was born on 23 August 1973. Coming from a military family, he was drawn towards the armed forces from an early age. Following his passion, he joined the Army after completing his education and was commissioned into the 3/4 Gorkha Rifles, an infantry regiment renowned for its brave soldiers and rich history of battle honours. His first posting took him to Jammu. Although the Kargil War officially ended on 26 July 1999, tensions along the Line of Control persisted into August. During this period his unit was deployed in the Tangdhar Valley in Kashmir, an area affected by active militancy and cross-border firing. On 4 August 1999, positions held by 3/4 GR came under heavy Pakistani shelling, and one of the bunkers took a direct hit, severely wounding soldiers. Disregarding his own safety amid continuing fire, Lieutenant Gurung pressed on with the rescue of his comrades. He was struck by shrapnel and gravely wounded, yet refused to give up and continued to save as many soldiers as possible. He succumbed to his injuries on 5 August 1999 at the age of 26, and was awarded the Sena Medal for his indomitable courage and supreme sacrifice.
