Nitin Gautam

Biography

Captain Nitin Gautam was born on 05 August 1987 in the Raura sector of Bilaspur district in Himachal Pradesh, to Rameshwar Gauttam and Suman Gauttam. Drawn to a life of service and discipline from an early age, he set his sights on a career in the armed forces and worked steadily towards that goal. He trained at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and subsequently at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, before being commissioned into the 9th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in 2010. As a young officer of an infantry regiment with a proud fighting tradition, Captain Nitin Gautam was posted to the demanding environment of the Drass Sector in Jammu and Kashmir, an area known for its harsh climate and difficult operational terrain. There he served with the battalion's 'Ghatak Platoon', the specialised assault detachment tasked with the most physically punishing and hazardous frontline duties. His deployment came under Operation Rakshak, the army's long-running counter-insurgency and area-domination campaign in the region. While on active operational duty with his Ghatak Platoon in the Drass Sector, Captain Nitin Gautam suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and passed away on 15 September 2012, at the age of just twenty-five. Though he did not fall to enemy fire, his death occurred in the line of duty amid the rigours of frontline operational service, and he was accorded battle casualty status in recognition of the circumstances of his sacrifice.
