Biography
Gunner Vikramjeet Singh hailed from Tepla village in Ambala district, Haryana. He joined the Army in 2014 and was inducted into the Garhwal Rifles Regiment, a unit renowned for its brave soldiers and numerous battle honours. After serving for some years with his parent unit, he was later deputed to the 36 Rashtriya Rifles battalion, deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for counter-terrorism operations. In 2018, his battalion was operating in the remote Gurez Sector of Bandipora district, guarding the Line of Control and preventing militant infiltration. On the night of 6 August 2018, around 1 a.m., eight heavily armed terrorists attempted to infiltrate into Indian territory near the Govind Nala in the Bakhtor area under cover of darkness. Alert soldiers detected the movement and challenged the infiltrators. Led by Major Kaustubh Rane, Gunner Vikramjeet Singh and his comrades engaged the terrorists in a fierce firefight, in which two militants were killed. During the intense exchange of fire he was gravely wounded. Evacuated to the 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar, he succumbed to his injuries on 7 August 2018, laying down his life in the service of the nation.
