Biography

Naib Subedar Rajwinder Singh hailed from Goindwal Sahib village in the Khadoor Sahib tehsil of Taran Taran district in Punjab. Born in 1980, he was the son of an army veteran, Havildar Jagir Singh, and Smt Balwinder Kaur. Inspired by his father, he aspired to serve in the Army from a young age, and after completing his schooling he enlisted at the age of twenty. He was recruited into 1 Sikh LI of the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment, an infantry unit renowned for its brave soldiers and rich history of battle honours. His younger brother Sukhwinder Singh also served in the Army before dying in a road accident in 2009. Over the years, Naib Subedar Rajwinder Singh matured into a battle-hardened soldier and a dependable junior commissioned officer, serving in various operational areas and gathering substantial field experience. By 2020 he had risen to the rank of Naib Subedar. During August that year, his unit was deployed in the Rajouri district of Jammu & Kashmir, manning the forward posts in the Nowshera sector along the Line of Control, an area frequently rocked by unprovoked ceasefire violations. On 30 August 2020, in the afternoon, Pakistan Army troops initiated heavy unprovoked firing on Indian posts from across the border in the Nowshera sector, targeting Khanger, Kalsian and Bhawani along the LoC. Naib Subedar Rajwinder Singh was supervising the forward posts when the Indian Army responded, and a fierce exchange of fire continued intermittently for several hours. During this engagement he was severely injured and later succumbed to his wounds. He laid down his life in the line of duty as a valiant soldier and committed junior commissioned officer.
