K Thangapandi

Biography

Subedar K Thangapandi hailed from Kanchipuram District in Tamil Nadu. Passionate about serving in the Armed Forces from his younger days, he was selected and joined the Indian Army in 2004. He was recruited into the Corps of EME (Electrical and Mechanical Engineers), the arm responsible for the design, development, trial, inspection, and refit of the weapon systems and equipment of the Indian Army. By 2024 he had completed nearly twenty years of service and had risen to the rank of Subedar, having served in many operational areas and earned the reputation of a dependable Junior Commissioned Officer. In September 2024, Sub Thangapandi's EME battalion was deployed at Binnaguri in West Bengal, providing repair and maintenance expertise for equipment and weapon systems to units under its controlling Command Headquarters. The area of responsibility spanned remote, rugged mountainous terrain with narrow roads, steep gradients and extreme weather, demanding frequent movement of personnel to keep Army units operationally worthy. On 5 September 2024, Sub Thangapandi was assigned an operational task requiring a road move to Sikkim. He set off from Pedong in Kalimpong district that morning with three comrades, bound for the village of Zuluk along the Silk Route. As the vehicle proceeded, a sudden downpour made the roads slick and treacherous. Despite the driver's best efforts to maintain control, the vehicle veered off the road near Dalopchand Dara along the Rhenock–Rongli state route and plummeted some 700 to 800 feet into a deep gorge, leaving it mangled beyond recognition. All four soldiers were severely injured and, though swiftly evacuated to a field hospital, succumbed to their injuries. Sub K Thangapandi, a committed and professionally competent Junior Commissioned Officer, laid down his life at the age of 41 in the line of duty, alongside Naik Gursev Singh, Sepoy Pradeep Patel and Craftsman W Peter.
