Biography

Havildar Palwinder Singh was born on 17 September 1980 in Rai Chak village of Batala tehsil in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab. His father, Shri Santokh Singh, served in the Border Security Force (BSF). Following the family tradition of service, Palwinder Singh joined the Army in the year 2000 at the age of twenty and was assigned to the 10 Sikh Regiment, a unit renowned for the bravery of its soldiers and its many battle honours. In 2017, his unit was deployed along the Line of Control in the Kazigund area of Kulgam, a highly unstable and active sector where the enemy frequently resorted to unprovoked firing and where security forces maintained constant armed patrols. On 4 December 2017, an army convoy carrying Havildar Palwinder Singh set out from Udhampur for an operation in Srinagar. As the convoy crossed the Khanabal area, militants concealed behind bushes launched a well-planned ambush, striking the convoy with heavy automatic weapons, rockets and grenades. Havildar Palwinder Singh was grievously wounded in the attack and laid down his life in the service of the nation.
