Biography

Naik Prem Bahadur Gurung was a valiant soldier of the Indian Army who made the supreme sacrifice on 24 September 1987 during Operation Meghdoot at the Siachen Glacier. Serving with 3/4 Gorkha Rifles, his unit was deployed to safeguard the strategically important Bilafond La complex. On 23–24 September 1987, enemy forces launched a determined attack against the Indian post. Alongside Lance Havildar Nar Bahadur Ale, Naik Gurung displayed exceptional courage and stood firm against the assault. He charged directly at the advancing enemy troops, forcing them to retreat, and pursued the fleeing soldiers, neutralizing three of them before succumbing to injuries sustained during the fierce close-quarter battle. His supreme sacrifice helped defend the post against the attacking enemy forces. He was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his exceptional gallantry.
