Biography

Major Avinash Singh Bhadauria was born on 14 December 1971 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, into a well-known and respected family. Although his father, Shri Ganga Singh Bhadauria, was a prominent political leader, Avinash charted a different path, drawn from an early age to the discipline, courage and sense of purpose embodied by the armed forces. In 1990 he was selected to join the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, where he distinguished himself as an exceptional cadet and earned the coveted title of Battalion Cadet Captain. After further training at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, he was commissioned in June 1994 into the 18 Madras Battalion of the Madras Regiment. His early postings took him to Hathigarh in Assam, an area troubled by insurgency, and later to Jamnagar in Gujarat near the sensitive Indo-Pak border. A natural sportsman, he excelled in shot put and discus throw. In 2000 he volunteered for a demanding deputation with the 8 Rashtriya Rifles, actively engaged in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, where his calm leadership and fearless conduct under fire earned him the trust of his comrades. On 28 September 2001, acting on intelligence about heavily armed terrorists in Doda district, Major Bhadauria led a search-and-destroy operation. Cordoning off the suspected hideout, his team came under a sudden burst of heavy gunfire. Leading from the front, he manoeuvred his troops to encircle the militants and engaged them at close quarters, single-handedly neutralising three terrorists. Struck by multiple bullets and grievously wounded, he continued to direct his men until the operation succeeded, before succumbing to his injuries at the age of 29. For his outstanding leadership, exceptional courage and supreme sacrifice, Major Avinash Singh Bhadauria was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra.
