Biography

Subedar Major Nain Singh Jamwal was a highly decorated Indian Army soldier who made the supreme sacrifice on 28 September 2000 during an operation in Panjnar village, Jammu & Kashmir. Serving with 4 Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry, he was part of an operation launched after intelligence reports indicated the presence of six terrorists in the area. When the terrorists attempted to break the army cordon and escape into a nearby ravine, Subedar Major Nain Singh positioned a Light Machine Gun group to pin them down while he moved to block their escape route. When heavy fire wounded an NCO and pinned down his party, he disregarded the danger and crawled through intense enemy fire to rescue the injured NCO, sustaining grievous injuries himself. Despite his wounds, he continued advancing toward the terrorist positions, threw a grenade, and charged while firing from the hip, killing one terrorist. A second terrorist then fired at him and struck him in the head. Even as he collapsed, Subedar Major Nain Singh fired a final accurate burst that killed the second terrorist before he succumbed to his injuries. For his conspicuous gallantry, indomitable spirit, and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra on 15 August 2001.
