Biography
Naik Mahendra Chemjung hailed from Chilingdin district in Nepal. In 2017 he was deployed in the Poonch sector of Jammu & Kashmir, serving the nation along the Line of Control. On 4 October 2017, at around 10:35 am, the Pakistan Army opened unprovoked fire on Indian Army posts in the Krishna Ghati sector. The Indian troops responded firmly, and heavy exchanges of fire continued from both sides for several hours. During the firing, a forward post in the Khari Karmara area of Poonch came under direct attack from across the LoC. Intermittent firing continued in the area throughout the day, spreading fear among residents living near the border. In the course of this engagement, Naik Mahendra Chemjung was gravely wounded. He was airlifted to the Command Hospital in Udhampur, but despite the best medical efforts he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom. He was only 35 years old at the time of his supreme sacrifice.
