Biography
Captain Deepak Sharma was born on 3 July 1983 in Bidhlan village, Sonipat, Haryana and raised in Rohtak. He completed his schooling at Shiksha Bharti School, Rohtak and graduated with a B.Tech from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak. He was commissioned into the Corps of Signals from Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai on 16 September 2006. In March 2008, he was deputed to 42 Rashtriya Rifles for counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir. On 4 March 2010, acting on intelligence that Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists were hiding in a house in Dadsara village, Pulwama, Captain Sharma led the assault personally. He entered the house through a window after lobbing grenades, eliminated one terrorist in the first room at close quarters, then pressed on to engage and eliminate two more militants hiding beneath a staircase. During this engagement, he sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the neck. He was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
