When LTTE militants detonated an IED concealed in an abandoned bicycle and opened fire, killing Major Uttam Chand Katoch and Major Suresh Harsha, Sepoy Shinde positioned himself in the direct line of attack, drawing enemy fire away from his injured officers for over 45 minutes until reinforcements arrived.
