Biography

Colonel Vasanth Venugopal was commissioned into the 9 Maratha Light Infantry on June 10, 1989, after passing out from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. Over his distinguished career spanning nearly two decades, he served in various operational areas and was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) for his exceptional service. On July 31, 2007, Colonel Vasanth was commanding his battalion in the Uri sector of Jammu & Kashmir when intelligence reports indicated a group of heavily armed terrorists attempting to infiltrate across the Line of Control. Despite the challenging terrain and adverse conditions, Colonel Vasanth personally led the operation from the front. During the fierce encounter, he sustained serious gunshot injuries but refused to be evacuated, continuing to direct the operation and engaging the terrorists at close quarters. His extraordinary courage and leadership resulted in the neutralization of multiple militants, but he made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. For his conspicuous gallantry, inspirational leadership, and supreme sacrifice, Colonel Vasanth Venugopal was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra — the nation's highest peacetime gallantry award. A statue was erected in his honor at the Army Selection Center (South), Bangalore, and a housing colony "Vasanth Vihar" was named after him by AWHO, Bangalore.
