Sudesh Kumar Chibber

Biography

Sudesh Kumar Chibber was born on March 28, 1943. He was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on October 16, 1965, at the age of 22, and trained as a fighter pilot. By 1971, he had completed five years of distinguished service with 108 Squadron "Hawkeyes" stationed at Pathankot Air Force Station — the first supersonic strike squadron of the Indian Air Force — flying the formidable Su-7 aircraft. During the Indo-Pak War of 1971, Flight Lieutenant Sudesh Kumar Chibber was tasked with interdiction missions as part of Operation Cactus Lily. On December 10, 1971, he undertook a critical strike mission to attack the strategically important Mandi Sadiq Ganj railway junction in Pakistan, a key logistics hub for enemy forces. Despite encountering heavy anti-aircraft defenses over the target area, Flight Lieutenant Chibber pressed home his attack with unwavering determination. During the strike run, his Su-7 aircraft received direct hits from anti-aircraft guns and was severely damaged. The aircraft crashed, and Flight Lieutenant Sudesh Kumar Chibber made the supreme sacrifice at the age of 28, giving his life in service to the nation during one of India's most decisive military conflicts.
