Biography
Ajit Singh was born on 8 April 1933 in Sobhana village, Jalandhar district, Punjab. He enlisted in the Indian Army on 23 May 1952 and was posted to 4 Sikh, The Sikh Regiment. During the Indo-Pak War of 1965, his unit was tasked with the assault on Burki as part of Operation Riddle. On 6 September 1965, Subedar Ajit Singh demonstrated supreme courage by single-handedly destroying an enemy machine gun emplacement that had pinned down his company's advance. Despite sustaining fatal chest wounds during the assault, his action enabled the successful capture of the objective. For his supreme courage and devotion to duty, Subedar Ajit Singh was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. A sports centre named 'Sub Ajit Sports Centre' was inaugurated in Jalandhar in April 2016 in his honour.
