Tanmay Singh Dandass

Biography

Tanmay Singh Dandass was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on 31 December 1963 at the age of eighteen. A natural flyer, he trained as a fighter pilot and was posted to the prestigious No. 26 Squadron at Air Force Station Adampur in February 1968, flying ground-attack missions with the squadron during one of the most active periods in its history. During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, under Operation Cactus Lily, Flight Lieutenant Dandass flew several combat sorties against Pakistani targets across the western front. On 16 December 1971, he was part of a four-aircraft formation detailed to attack the heavily defended Narowal railway station inside Pakistan. As he pressed home the attack in a steep glide onto the target, his aircraft was hit directly by enemy anti-aircraft fire. He was last seen going down over enemy territory. Flight Lieutenant Dandass was initially reported as missing in action and is believed to have been captured as a prisoner of war, though Pakistan has consistently denied holding him. His name appears on the official list of 54 Indian Defence Personnel Missing in Action that was tabled in the Lok Sabha in 1979, a haunting reminder of a fighter pilot who flew into the fire of a well-defended target and never returned.
