Biography

Rifleman Anusuya Prasad Dhyani hailed from the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. He completed his schooling up to the twelfth class in his home state and went on to graduate from Deshbandhu College in South Delhi, before answering the call to serve and joining the Army in 1995 at the age of twenty. He was assigned to the 18th Battalion of The Garhwal Rifles. During Operation Vijay in the Kargil War, his battalion was tasked with capturing Point 4700 in the Drass sector. On the night of 28-29 June 1999, his company advanced on the feature, which was heavily fortified with eight sangars firing automatic weapons. Realising that one sangar was holding up the entire assault, Rifleman Dhyani charged it through a hail of fire and, in fierce hand-to-hand combat, killed three of the infiltrators manning it. Grievously wounded by multiple bullet injuries in the struggle, he succumbed to his wounds at the age of twenty-four, having cleared the way for his comrades. For his conspicuous gallantry and supreme sacrifice he was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra.
