Biography

Lance Havildar Prem Bahadur Resmi Magar hailed from Sauni village in the Palpa district of Nepal, born into humble circumstances. He enlisted in the Indian Army in 1997 and was inducted into the 1st Battalion of the 3 Gorkha Rifles, an infantry unit renowned for the legendary courage of its Gorkha soldiers. Over nearly eighteen years of service across demanding operational areas he earned a place in his battalion's elite Ghatak commando platoon. In June 2016 his unit was deployed in the volatile Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district, along the Line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir. On 16 June 2016 Lance Havildar Magar detected a group of heavily armed infiltrators attempting to cross over and engaged them at close quarters. In the fierce firefight that followed he eliminated four terrorists, even as he was hit by multiple gunshots. Despite grievous wounds he kept fighting until the threat was neutralised, and then laid down his life for the nation. For his conspicuous gallantry and supreme sacrifice, Lance Havildar Prem Bahadur Resmi Magar was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
