Phurba Tamang

Biography

Rifleman Phurba Tamang hailed from Pedong town in the Kalimpong district of West Bengal and was born on 5 January 1973. The son of Shri Lok Bahadur Tamang and Smt Shanti Tamang, he joined the army on 26 October 1993 at the age of 20. He was enrolled into the 4th Battalion of the 3 Gorkha Rifles (4/3 GR), an infantry regiment renowned for its fearless soldiers and a distinguished lineage stretching back to its raising during the World Wars and its later re-raising at Birpur, Dehradun, in 1962. Following the completion of his training, Rifleman Tamang served in various operational areas, including Gurdaspur in Punjab, Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan, and Almora in Uttarakhand. By 1999 he had put in over six years of service and had developed into a committed soldier capable of handling varied operational tasks. During July-August 1999, his unit was deployed in the Batalik sector of Ladakh as part of Operation Vijay. Although the Kargil War officially ended on 26 July 1999, the situation along the Line of Control remained tense, with unprovoked firing from across the border and active militancy in the unit's area of responsibility demanding constant vigilance. On 23 August 1999, acting on intelligence inputs, the 4/3 GR battalion launched an operation against infiltrators in its area, and Rifleman Tamang was made part of the assigned team. As they reached the suspected area, they came under a heavy volume of enemy fire. Realising the gravity of the situation, Rifleman Tamang immediately swung into action and provided covering fire to his comrades. While manoeuvring over rocky, slippery terrain, he slipped and fell off a cliff, suffering severe injuries to which he soon succumbed. He was a determined and courageous soldier who laid down his life at the age of 26 in the line of duty.
