Biography

Major Greesh Chandra Verma was born on 29 August 1939 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, the son of Shri S.P. Verma. After completing his early education, he joined the Army and passed out from the training academy as a Second Lieutenant on 18 December 1960 at the age of 21. He was commissioned into the 3rd Battalion of the Dogra Regiment, a decorated infantry unit renowned for its brave soldiers and many battle honours. During the 1965 Indo-Pak War, 3 Dogra was deployed in the Poonch sector under the 93 Infantry Brigade of 25 Infantry Division. As part of Operation Faulad to seal the Haji Pir bulge, the battalion was tasked with capturing the formidable, heavily fortified enemy pickets of Raja and Chand Tekri, ringed with wire and mines. On 6 September 1965, Major Verma led B Company in the assault on Point 7702. Amid intense enemy fire, he moved to the forward line to direct the operation, and in fierce hand-to-hand and bunker-to-bunker fighting the enemy was routed. In the final stage he was hit in the head by an enemy bullet but refused to be evacuated, breathing his last only after seeing the success signal. For his indomitable courage, exceptional leadership and supreme sacrifice, he was awarded the Vir Chakra.
