Biography
Desh Raj Singh hailed from Tajpur Simbhalka village, Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh. He joined the National Defence Academy in 1979 and later graduated from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. Commissioned into 5 Dogra, he served with distinction for approximately two decades. During Operation Parakram in April 2003, while leading counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir, a soldier in his unit struck a landmine. Without caring for his own safety, Major Desh Raj Singh immediately swung into action to move the injured soldier to safety. In the process, he was himself grievously injured and subsequently succumbed to his wounds on 10 April 2003, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
