Biography
Rifleman Shive Kumar hailed from Karur village in the Kishtwar tehsil of Doda district, Jammu & Kashmir. The son of Shri Somnath, he dreamed of joining the Army from childhood. He was fond of bodybuilding and led a disciplined life. Realising his dream, he enlisted in 2005 and was inducted into the 15 Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry, a regiment renowned for its brave soldiers. Over nearly 13 years of service he served in various difficult terrains and challenging operational areas. After serving with his parent unit, he was deputed to the 31 Rashtriya Rifles battalion for counter-terrorism operations in Jammu & Kashmir. In 2018, his unit was deployed in the Bandipora sector, where the densely forested area of responsibility was being used by terrorists to infiltrate from across the border. On 30 August 2018, intelligence indicated that militants had crossed the Line of Control. A cordon-and-search operation was launched by 31 RR and 27 RR. The first contact came at dawn on 31 August, and in the ensuing fierce firefight three terrorists were eliminated. During the encounter Rifleman Shive Kumar was critically wounded and evacuated to the 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar, where he succumbed to his injuries. For his indomitable courage, valour and supreme sacrifice, he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
