Biography

Naik Rajeshver Singh hailed from the Udhampur district of Jammu & Kashmir. The son of Shri Balwan Singh and Smt Satya Devi, he joined the Army after completing his school education. He was recruited into the 16 Punjab battalion of the Punjab Regiment, an infantry regiment with a long and distinguished history of gallantry and numerous battle exploits. During 2012, his unit was deployed in the Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir. As the battalion's Area of Responsibility ran along the Line of Control, it was prone to infiltration from across the border. Besides manning forward posts and undertaking counter-infiltration operations, the unit launched regular armed patrols to monitor its area. On 04 September 2012, Naik Rajeshver Singh was deployed at Abdul Hut Post on the Line of Control when, at 1640 hours, the post came under heavy automatic fire from enemy positions at Ratwaji Nar. During the initial volley of enemy fire, Sepoy Sushil Kumar was wounded, and Naik Rajeshver Singh, displaying raw courage, rushed to his aid. In the process he observed intruders charging from thick foliage towards the post. Showing exceptional courage, camaraderie and total disregard for his own safety, he quickly changed his position and charged towards the leading terrorist who had closed in on the post. The ensuing firefight resulted in the killing of one terrorist while he himself sustained a burst of fire. Undeterred by his injuries, he continued to fight and wounded a second terrorist, forcing the enemy to abandon their assault and successfully repulsing the threat to the post. Naik Rajeshver Singh later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. For his dauntless courage and exceptional bravery beyond the call of duty, he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
