Biography

Rifleman Kaisar Ahmad Shah hailed from Shangus village in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, an area shaped by a challenging history and frequent disruptions arising from conflict in the region. Growing up, he witnessed the hardships faced by people in his community, an experience that strengthened his resolve to serve and protect. From a young age he was known for his resilience, sense of duty, and love for his homeland. For him, joining the army was not merely a career choice but a calling — a way to contribute to the safety and progress of his people. After completing his school education he fulfilled his dream and joined the army, being recruited into the 3 JAK LI battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment, a unit known for its brave soldiers and rich history of battle honours. He was later deputed to serve with the 18 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for counter-insurgency operations. The Rashtriya Rifles, known for its specialised training and high operational tempo, kept Rfn Kaisar frequently involved in high-risk missions and life-threatening situations, all of which he undertook with deep commitment to his duty. In October 2024, his unit was engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the Baramulla district near the Line of Control. On the evening of 24 October 2024, a convoy carrying personnel of the 18 Rashtriya Rifles, along with civilian porters, was moving through the rugged, forested terrain near Botapathri, close to Gulmarg, carrying essential supplies to the Nagin post in the Afarwat range. As the convoy reached Botapathri, terrorists ambushed it, opening fire on two of the army trucks. In the fierce firefight that followed, Rfn Kaisar Ahmad Shah and his comrades took defensive positions with great courage. He sustained grievous injuries and succumbed to them, laying down his life in the line of duty.
