Biography

Sapper Sreejith M J was born on 19 May 1989 in Paruthipully village, Palakkad district, Kerala. He completed his schooling at Kottayi High School and later graduated from the Industrial Training Centre in Lakkidi as a diesel mechanic. He joined the Indian Army in 2008 and was inducted into the Corps of Engineers in September 2009, being posted to 419 Army Engineer Regiment. After serving with his parent unit, Sapper Sreejith was deputed to 44 Rashtriya Rifles for counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir. On the night of 22/23 February 2017, his unit launched a joint operation with J&K Police SOG against militants in Kungoo village, Shopian district. While returning from the operation, the convoy was ambushed by Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militants at Mulu Chitragam who fired indiscriminately, injuring seven soldiers including two officers. Sapper Sreejith M J along with Lance Naik Ghulam Mohiuddin Rather and Sepoy Vikas Singh Gurjar succumbed to their injuries and made the supreme sacrifice at the age of 27. Despite losing his father at a young age, he had built a new house for his mother before his martyrdom.
