Biography
Lieutenant Kuldeep Singh was born on 15 March 1978 in Rohtak, Haryana, to Shri Khushi Ram and Smt Raj Kumari. He was the youngest of five siblings. He studied at Campus School, Rohtak, and went on to earn a B.Com degree from Government College, Rohtak. After clearing the Combined Defence Services Examination in 1999, he trained at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, and was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry on 9 December 2000. Kashmir was his first posting, where he served with 11 Sikh LI on counter-insurgency duties. In early July 2001, Lieutenant Kuldeep Singh led a search and cordon operation against militants in the forests of Baramulla district. During intense combat around 2:30 AM on 4 July 2001, he led from the front and sustained a fatal head injury. He was just 23 years old. Lieutenant Kuldeep Singh embodied the finest traditions of the Indian Army, leading from the front and making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
