Biography
Jangbir Singh was born on November 7, 1960, in Bina Malla village, Charnoli, Garhwal district, Uttar Pradesh. He enlisted in the Indian Army on July 9, 1980, and served for nine years with the 4 Garhwal Rifles. During Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, Lance Naik Jangbir Singh displayed extraordinary bravery while engaging LTTE militants. While covering his platoon's retreat, he held his position under heavy automatic fire. Though isolated and badly wounded, he continued firing at the militants, protecting his comrades at the cost of his own life. For his exceptional bravery and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra.
