Biography

Ranjeet Singh was born on 1 July 1960 in Dughra village, Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh. He enlisted in the Indian Army on 20 July 1979 and was posted to 5 Para, The Parachute Regiment. In 1988, he was deployed to Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF). During Operation Pawan on 8 April 1989, Naik Ranjeet Singh's unit was engaged in a raid against LTTE militants. Displaying boldness and exemplary courage, he charged from behind cover and while on the move, fired and killed one militant. He then pursued another fleeing militant but was shot in the chest and made the supreme sacrifice. For his boldness, exemplary courage and initiative in action against militants, Naik Ranjeet Singh was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra.
