Osman Contractor

Biography

Brigadier Osman Contractor had a distinguished 32-year military career, commissioned on 21 December 1969 through the 28th Tech Graduate course at IMA Dehradun. He participated in the 1971 Indo-Pak War when his unit, the 974 Air Defence Workshop, deployed in Srinagar. As a young Captain, he served as Adjutant at EME School in Baroda and later as instructor at OTS Madras. As Colonel, he commanded the 639 EME Battalion at Yol (1991-93) before becoming Head of Department of Tactics and Management at MCEME. From 1995-98, he served as Deputy Military Attache at Indias Moscow Embassy, evaluating armored vehicles and providing engineering support for Russian-origin military equipment. His subsequent postings included Joint Director in Master General Ordnance Branch, Commandant of 505 Army Base Workshop in New Delhi (1998-2000), and Deputy Director General Equipment Management (2000-2001). A die-hard soldier at heart, he was a good human being who commanded respect from superiors and subordinates alike.
