Shaheed Shivaram Rajguru

Biography

Shivaram Hari Rajguru was a fearless Indian revolutionary and a key member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). Born on 24 August 1908 in Khed, near Pune in Maharashtra, he was known for his exceptional marksmanship and physical courage. Rajguru was deeply influenced by the ideals of Indian independence and joined the revolutionary movement at a young age. He became closely associated with Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev Thapar in their mission to fight British colonial rule. Rajguru played a direct role in the assassination of British police officer John P. Saunders on 17 December 1928 in Lahore, an act carried out to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai who had been fatally injured during a peaceful protest. It was Rajguru who fired the first shot at Saunders. After the incident, the revolutionaries evaded capture for several months, but Rajguru was eventually arrested in Pune in September 1929. During the Lahore Conspiracy Case trial, Rajguru, along with Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev, was sentenced to death. Despite massive public outcry and appeals for mercy from leaders across India, the three revolutionaries were hanged on 23 March 1931 at Lahore Central Jail. Rajguru was just 22 years old. His fearless spirit and supreme sacrifice for the motherland remain an eternal source of inspiration for all Indians.
