Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar

Biography

Sukhdev Thapar was a prominent Indian revolutionary and a key member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). Born on 15 May 1907 in Ludhiana, Punjab, he was drawn to the independence movement from a young age. He was a close associate of Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru and played a crucial role in organizing revolutionary activities against British colonial rule. Sukhdev was instrumental in establishing the Naujawan Bharat Sabha, a youth organization that sought to inspire young Indians to join the freedom struggle. He was deeply committed to the ideals of socialism and worked tirelessly to build a network of revolutionaries across Punjab. Following the Lahore Conspiracy Case, Sukhdev was arrested along with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru. During the trial, he displayed remarkable courage and used the courtroom as a platform to voice the aspirations of a free India. Despite international appeals for clemency, Sukhdev Thapar was hanged alongside Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru on 23 March 1931 at Lahore Central Jail. He was 23 years old. His unwavering commitment to Indias freedom and his ultimate sacrifice continue to inspire generations.
