Vinay R Sachan

Biography

Captain Vinay R Sachan was born on January 13, 1977, in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He completed his schooling at H K Gidwani High School in Mulund and Sister Nivedita English School in Dombivli, followed by graduation from K V Pendharkar College, Dombivli. Driven by a desire to serve the nation, Vinay joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun on June 11, 1998, and was commissioned into the 5th Battalion of the Maratha Light Infantry on December 10, 1999. After his initial posting in Jammu & Kashmir, his unit moved to Kota, Rajasthan, in 2000, where he completed the Young Officers course and underwent Commando training at Belgaum. In 2001, he was deployed on the Rajasthan border near Bikaner. In February 2003, Captain Sachan was deputed to 27 Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Jammu & Kashmir. On March 24, 2003, he led a counter-insurgency operation against militants in Bafliaz village, Surankote tehsil, Poonch district. During the fierce engagement, he was surrounded from all sides by three terrorists. Displaying extraordinary courage and valour, he eliminated two of the terrorists before being fatally wounded by multiple gunshots. Captain Vinay R Sachan made the supreme sacrifice at the age of 26. A battle tank memorial has been installed at the Sports Complex in Dombivli, Mumbai, in his honour, standing as a testament to his bravery and selfless service to the nation.
