Biography
Born on 1 April 1925 in Amritsar district, Punjab, Piara Singh enlisted in the Indian Army in 1948 and rose through the ranks over 16 distinguished years of service, eventually becoming a Subedar in the 5th Battalion, The Sikh Light Infantry. During the Indo-Pak War of 1965, Subedar Piara Singh led his platoon in a daring assault on an enemy position at OP Hill in the Mendhar Sector, Jammu & Kashmir. The attack required navigating through a treacherous minefield and wire obstacles under intense enemy fire. Despite the overwhelming odds, he displayed exceptional courage and determination as he led his men forward to clear the enemy bunkers. When an 83-mm rocket launcher position halted the platoon's advance, Subedar Piara Singh charged forward with extraordinary bravery and hurled a grenade into the bunker. In the fierce exchange, an exploding rocket severed both his legs. Even with these devastating injuries, he ensured the bunker was captured and continued to encourage his soldiers to press on. He succumbed to his wounds on the battlefield. The operation at OP Hill resulted in 37 casualties from his battalion, underscoring the ferocity of the engagement. For his indomitable courage, inspiring leadership, and supreme sacrifice that exemplified the finest traditions of the Indian Army, Subedar Piara Singh was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra.
