Biography

Major Kanwal Gulzar Singh was born on 3 April 1963, into a distinguished military family. His father, Major Kartar Singh, was an army veteran, and military service ran deep in the family lineage — his grandfather and brother also served in the armed forces. Among his unit officers, he earned the nickname ‘Yudhisthir,’ symbolizing truth and idealism, reflecting his upright, caring, and principled nature. The Major was an avid reader with an extensive book collection that his mother preserved as cherished mementos. He enjoyed music and playing hockey. Throughout his military career, he completed several prestigious courses including high altitude training, commando instruction, and the Defence Services Staff Course, demonstrating his commitment to professional development. Until May 1999, his unit was stationed in Manipur. When ordered to Kashmir during the early Kargil conflict, his train reached Jalandhar on June 5, 1999. His family gathered to meet him after eight months without leave. His brother, Major Paramjeet Singh, was serving with 31 Medical Regiment in Akhnoor. On July 4, 1999, deputed with 32 Rashtriya Rifles from 5th Battalion, 9 Gorkha Rifles, Major Gulzar led a patrol in Kupwara district. Terrorists ambushed the team near their hideout. During the fierce firefight, Major Gulzar was hit by 18 bullets and made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.
