Biography
Sunit Barnie hailed from Jaipur, Rajasthan. Commissioned through the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, he was posted to 16 Sikh Light Infantry and deployed along the Line of Control in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district. On the night of 8 April 1995, enemy forces launched a fierce attack on the 'Hump' post. While operating a medium machine gun, Captain Barnie repositioned it under intense rocket and automatic fire to effectively counter the assault. He was struck by shrapnel in the groin but refused to be evacuated, continuing to engage the enemy until their fire was completely suppressed. He succumbed to his wounds at 1:30 AM on 9 April 1995. For his pre-eminent valour and spirit of self-sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra on 26 January 1996.
