Biography

Kamlesh Kumar was born on 9 April 1948 in Sultanpur village, Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. He enlisted in the Indian Army's Parachute Regiment and was later assigned to the elite 4 Para (Special Forces). During the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, his unit was tasked with recapturing the Nagi sand dune in Sri Ganga Nagar district, Rajasthan, which had been occupied by Pakistani forces. On the night of 27-28 December 1971, 4 Para launched a fierce assault on the heavily fortified position. The Battle of Nagi was one of the most intense engagements of the war, with 4 Para sustaining 24 casualties including three officers. Paratrooper Kamlesh Kumar laid down his life at the age of 23 in the line of duty during this battle.
