Biography

Shiv Kumar Pal hailed from Pratapgarh district, Uttar Pradesh. He joined the Indian Army in 1988 and served for over 25 years with the Mahar Regiment, rising to the rank of Naib Subedar. In 2013, he was deployed with the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) as part of the Indian contingent. On 9 April 2013, Nb Sub Pal was part of a 32-member patrol led by Lt Col Mahipal Singh in the Jonglei region. Near Gumuruk, their convoy was ambushed by over 200 rebels armed with automatic weapons. During the intense combat that lasted approximately one hour, he sustained fatal gunshot wounds alongside four other Indian soldiers. For his courage and devotion to duty, Naib Subedar Shiv Kumar Pal was posthumously awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal by the United Nations.
