Biography

Major Manoj Talwar was born on 29 August 1969 in the Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. He was commissioned in 1992 and posted to the Mahar Regiment. By June 1999 Major Talwar was serving with 9 Mahar, deployed on the Siachen Glacier. As the Indian Army pressed large-scale operations against Pakistani forces astride the Zoji La during the Kargil conflict, enemy activity in the Siachen sector intensified, and troops carried out aggressive patrolling over treacherous, crevassed terrain to thwart any intrusion. On 13 June 1999, while leading one such patrol, Major Talwar came under enemy fire and was grievously wounded. Despite his injuries he directed his men to retaliate and fight on before he succumbed. Leading from the front in the finest tradition of his regiment, he displayed courage, fortitude and leadership of a high order and laid down his life for the nation at the age of twenty-nine.
