Biography

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan displayed exceptional bravery during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. He was a true hero who led from the front and sacrificed his life for the safety of others. Born on 15 March 1977 in Kozhikode, Kerala, he later grew up in Bengaluru and joined the Indian Army through the National Defence Academy. He was commissioned into the 7th Battalion of the Bihar Regiment in 1999. During the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, he led an NSG team at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel to rescue hostages and confront the terrorists. While ensuring the evacuation of an injured commando and continuing the operation, he was fatally wounded. For his extraordinary courage and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra.
