Biography

Havaldar Sarman Singh Sengar hailed from the Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh. The son of Shri Udaybhan Singh Sengar and Shrimati Shivpati Devi, he had aspired to serve in the army from an early age. After completing his early education in Gwalior, he joined the Indian Army and was enrolled in the 2nd Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles, an infantry regiment renowned for its brave soldiers and numerous battle honours. During the Kargil War of 1999, his battalion, then part of the 81 Mountain Brigade under the command of Lieutenant Colonel MB Ravindranath, was inducted into the Dras sector on 4 June 1999. Following the Indian victories at Tololing and Point 5140, sustained pressure was maintained on the enemy. As part of the operations to capture the strategically vital Three Pimples (Black Rock) complex and clear infiltrators from the heights overlooking the Dras–Sandho valley, 2 Raj Rif was tasked with assaulting heavily defended positions. In the course of these fierce operations to evict Pakistani intruders from Indian territory, Havaldar Sarman Singh Sengar laid down his life on 20 June 1999. For his courage and supreme sacrifice, he was awarded the Sena Medal.
