Biography
Lance Naik Karam Singh served with the 1st Battalion, The Sikh Regiment. On 13 October 1948, during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947–48, he commanded a forward section at Richhmar Gali in Jammu & Kashmir. The enemy launched eight successive attacks on the position. Though wounded and bleeding, Karam Singh moved from bunker to bunker encouraging his men and beating back each assault, finally leading a bayonet counter-attack that drove the enemy off. For his conspicuous courage and indomitable gallantry under extreme adversity he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, becoming one of the first recipients of the nation's highest gallantry honour.
