Prafulla Moharkar

Biography

Major Prafulla Moharkar was born on 31 July 1984 in Bhandara, Maharashtra. Drawn to a life of service, he gave up his engineering studies to join the Army and was commissioned in 2007 through the Technical Entry Scheme after training at the College of Military Engineering, Pune. He served with the 2nd Battalion of the Sikh Regiment, 2 Sikh. In December 2017 his battalion was deployed along the Line of Control in the Keri sector of Rajouri district, Jammu and Kashmir, one of the most volatile stretches of the frontier. On 23 December 2017, while leading an armed patrol near Brat Galla, his party came under a heavy ambush backed by artillery fire from across the border. Major Moharkar fought back with remarkable bravery, leading his men from the front, until he was grievously wounded and succumbed to his injuries along with three of his comrades. Major Moharkar fell defending the nation's borders with unflinching courage. His gallantry and devotion to duty remain a lasting inspiration.
