Biography

Subedar Nirmal Singh hailed from Purana Shalla village in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab. He joined the Army before turning twenty and was enrolled into the 8 Sikh battalion of the Sikh Regiment, an infantry regiment renowned for its fearless soldiers and rich history of battle honours. By 1999, he had completed over two decades of service and had grown into a motivated junior commissioned officer. During the Kargil War of 1999, his unit was inducted in Drass in mid-May under the 121 Infantry Brigade, and later placed under 192 Mountain Brigade for the assault on Tiger Hill. Standing at 5,062 metres, Tiger Hill dominated the Mushkoh valley and NH-1D, and its rugged slopes rose to gradients of nearly 80 degrees. On 5 July 1999, Subedar Nirmal Singh was tasked to lead one of three teams to establish a firm base for the capture of the India Gate, Helmet and Rocky Knob objectives. Amid intense enemy shelling and direct fire, he and his men displayed outstanding bravery, clearing bunkers one after another until India Gate and Helmet had been captured by dawn. Though seriously wounded, he took on the enemy at close quarters and kept motivating his troops until he succumbed to his injuries. His valour paved the way for the eventual capture of Tiger Hill, and he was awarded the Vir Chakra.
