Udayman Singh

Biography

Grenadier Udayman Singh was a native of Shamchak town in Jammu & Kashmir. Born to Onkar Singh and Kanta Devi, he had two elder sisters. From childhood he aspired to serve in the army, and through hard determination and hard work he achieved his goal at the age of eighteen, when he was enrolled into the 18 Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian Army. During the Kargil War, on the night of 4 July 1999, the 18 Grenadiers team, along with two other battalions, was tasked with recapturing Tiger Hill. To dislodge the Pakistani intruders from the heights, the assaulting troops scaled the peak using ropes and other climbing equipment. On reaching the summit they came under heavy enemy fire. In the ensuing gun battle, Grenadier Udayman Singh was struck by a burst from an enemy automatic weapon and was gravely wounded. He succumbed to his injuries on 5 July 1999, laying down his life for the nation during the recapture of Tiger Hill.
