Biography
Grenadier Hasan Muhammad hailed from Gera Kalan village in the Agra district of Uttar Pradesh. He joined the Army after completing his early education and was inducted into the 22 Grenadiers Battalion of the Grenadiers Regiment, an infantry unit renowned for its brave soldiers and numerous battle honours. Married only in April 1999, he was recalled to his unit within days of his wedding as tensions rose along the Line of Control. During June–July 1999, his unit was deployed in the Batalik sector of Ladakh as part of Operation Vijay under the 70 Infantry Brigade. The enemy's main intrusions lay along the formidable Khalubar–Padma Go ridgeline, and 22 Grenadiers were tasked with capturing the Khalubar and Point 5287 complex. The assault began on the night of 30 June/1 July 1999. Led by Major Ajit Singh Shekhawat, Grenadier Hasan Muhammad and his comrades reached their objective but faced fierce counter-attacks. Heavily outnumbered, the Grenadiers fought on for three nights amid intense artillery barrages and heavily fortified bunkers. During the exchange of fire, Grenadier Hasan Muhammad was severely injured and succumbed to his wounds on 3 July 1999, having played a significant role in the eventual capture of Khalubar.
