Biography

Havaldar Molan Pun Nagar hailed from Rolpa district in Nepal. After completing his school education, he joined the army and was recruited into the 2nd Battalion of the Naga Regiment, one of the youngest regiments of the Indian Army, raised on 11 February 1985 at Haldwani with the motto "Parakramo Vijayate" (Valour triumphs). In July 1999, his unit was deployed in the Drass sector of Jammu & Kashmir along the Line of Control during Operation Vijay, launched to evict Pakistani infiltrators from the Kargil region. Following the capture of Tiger Hill on 5 July, the next major objective was Point 4875, a dominating feature overlooking the Mugalpur–Drass stretch of the national highway. The assault was executed in phases, with 2 Naga tasked to capture 'Twin Bumps' by first light of 7 July. On the night of 5/6 July, Havaldar Molan Pun and his comrades launched a fierce attack on enemy positions. Despite stiff opposition, they made steady progress and secured the objective as planned by 7 July, enabling raids that destroyed an enemy mortar position and set the stage for subsequent successes. During the battle, Havaldar Molan Pun was seriously wounded and later succumbed to his injuries, laying down his life in the line of duty.
