Biography

Sepoy K Ashuli Mao hailed from the scenic Senapati district in the north-eastern state of Manipur. Born on 1 March 1976 to Shri S. Kapani and Smt. N. Takra, he grew up in a humble, close-knit family in the hills of Manipur, deeply influenced by an ethos of service and sacrifice. After completing his schooling, his strong sense of patriotism inspired him to join the Indian Army. He was inducted into the 1st Battalion of the Naga Regiment, a proud infantry unit known as the "Head Hunters," celebrated for its bravery and unflinching loyalty in operation after operation. During the summer of 1999, as the Kargil conflict flared, 1 Naga was redeployed to the Drass sector and placed under 121 Infantry Brigade. As part of a three-pronged assault to seize the pivotal Point 5140 on the Tololing ridge, Alpha Company of 1 Naga was ordered to capture two subsidiary crags code-named "Pyramid" and "Black Tooth." Among the assault group was Sepoy Ashuli, only twenty-three yet already seasoned in high-altitude soldiering. Beginning the climb on the evening of 22 July, the men found the route narrowing into a sheer wall swept by enemy fire from concealed sangars. Realising the advance would stall unless a fixed rope could be laid, Sepoy Ashuli volunteered to pioneer the route. Disregarding his own safety, he inched up fourteen metres of exposed rock using only finger-holds in the granite face, secured the rope and hauled up the first wave of comrades. Once on the ridge, he stormed the Black Tooth sangar alongside Sepoy Sunder Singh Negi, his light-machine-gun bursts pinning the defenders until a grenade found its mark. The position fell, opening the gateway to Point 5140, but Ashuli was gravely wounded. He held on through the night, relaying the mission's success before succumbing to his injuries in the early hours of 23 July 1999. For his conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, he was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra.
