Biography

Flight Lieutenant Advitiya Bal hailed from Ranbir Singh Pura in the Jammu district of Jammu & Kashmir and was born on 16 July 1996 into a family with a strong military tradition. His father, Swarn Bal, was an army veteran, and two of his uncles had also served in the armed forces. From early childhood, Advitiya was captivated by the sky and dreamed of becoming an Air Force pilot. After his primary education he joined the Sainik School at Nagrota, where the foundation of his military life was laid. Following his passion, he was selected for the National Defence Academy, joining the prestigious institution in 2014. He subsequently trained at the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad and was commissioned as a Flying Officer on 16 June 2018 as part of the 201st Pilots' Course. After completing his multi-phase fighter flying training, he was posted to a front-line fighter squadron based at Uttarlai Air Force Station in the Barmer district of Rajasthan. He soon gained experience in various air combat operations and developed into a professionally competent and committed air warrior with No. 4 Squadron of the IAF. During peacetime, training remains one of the most vital activities of the IAF, keeping its pilots prepared for any eventuality. On the night of 28 July 2022, Flt Lt Advitiya Bal was undertaking a training sortie for an air combat mission in a MIG-21 trainer aircraft alongside Wing Commander Mohit Rana, the Flight Commander of the squadron. Shortly after take-off from Uttarlai airbase, the pilots reported a fire in the engine and initiated emergency measures. The aircraft burst into flames mid-air and crashed at around 2110 hrs, leaving no time to eject. Flt Lt Advitiya Bal, a valiant and dedicated air warrior, laid down his life in the service of the nation at the age of 26.
